Forever looking for ways to innovate, Ableton and their users have always provided interesting nd forward-thinking music making tools and now Eurorack module maker Mutable Instruments have ported two of their most popular Eurorack modules to Max for Live.
Clouds and Braids have both been unofficially ported by developer Timo Rozendal via Max for Live, so you’ll need the full Ableton Suite to run them.
For modular purists it’s unlikely to turn their heads, but for anyone fascinated by the appeal of modular, but not so intrigued by the price, it could be a great way to get into the ever-growing world of modular synths. Recently, another free service VCV Rack offered an open source take on modular while a new Ableton Sampler insutrment dives deeper into sound design and granular synthesis. Lots to inspire.
Download a free open-source modular synth from VCV. The new software lets users patch together virtual modules in a Rack environment. Similar to Softube’s Modular plugin, users can download extra modules based on popular units such as Mutable Instruments and Befaco. Maybe they’ll introduce the space-inspired Qu-bit Pulsarsoon. If you’ve been intrigued by modular synthesis but don’t want to invest just yet, it’s a good way to get to grips with the theories.
If you’re missing the hands-on nature of modular synths, you can hook up your MIDI controller and map to any parameter or simply use your mouse to perform. A DAW-compatible version is coming soon. The original download comes with eight modules to whet your appetite and if you’re thirsty for more, you can download extra modules for free from the VCV website. Who knows, you may end up with a studio like Deadmau5.
