DJ Groovy Q started his “attack on the dance floor” in late 1997 armed with a two-year work visa for the UK. Initially his interest was in creating music, but after experiencing the various vibes that clubbing in London, Leeds, Ibiza and North Carolina (USA) had to offer, he tried his hand at mixing. Groovy Q was soon cutting his teeth on the wheels of steel at private parties in and around London.
On his return home in 2000, he scored South African residencies at Johannesburg clubs AKWA and Purple Fly, where he ventured into the commercial genre, but soon returned to his true sound – a melting pot of Funky, Vocal, French and Disco house when joining the resident DJ line-up at Joburgs legendary Therapy / GASS club.
As one of Johannesburg’s leading circuit DJ’s he has also played at the YSL Villa parties, the Gaulious Parties – Paris with Love, the AFDA Festival, SpringFest, Red Hill Rock Fest, and at one point he was mixing under the Red Bull Home Groove banner. Groovy Q has played at many venues around the country including Mojo, Foo Moon Fusion, Bitch, Truth, MiHouse, Oh! Bar, The Roxy, Mynt, CRU, Legends, Carfax, Lemon 8, The Pyramid, The Woods, Vacca Matta, Mo’s, CCHQ, Statement, Aqua Lounge, 115, in Johannesburg, plus Sliver, Baseline, Café Atlantica, The Rooftop Bar, Julep and Dragon Room in Cape Town and Tiffendel (Muluti Mountain Ski Lodge) to name a few. He has also been a feature on the Johannesburg Pride, Port Elizabeth Pride and Cape Town Pride Parties line-up.
Groovy Q is presently resident and promoter behind the party troupe Clique. He was part of the team that put together the Swanky parties @ Taboo, the All Pink Party @ The Woods and The Citrus Lounge themed parties. Past residencies have included Cherry Thursday (Therapy / G.A.S.S.) and alternate Saturday residency at Therapy and the Sunday club Remedy (115/Oh!).
His style of music is laid back, jazzy and always fresh – mixing French House, New York styled Vocal Garage, and a little UK Two Step. He also includes some of his own tracks in his sets, and his trademark signature is house remixes of Sade. He is currently one of the Top 60 South African DJ’s as voted by clubbersguide.co.za.
Groovy Q has played alongside local DJ’s including Stuart Hillary, Coco Loco, Mark Stent, Sista C, Thelma Klensch, Tasha Baxter, M’buso, Brian Banshee, Lady Lea, DJFKA, Doctor Stone, Lalicia, Trevthedev, Prince Vince, Tony Stallion, Delon Palm, Fluid, Warren Louder, Groove Element, Angelo, MissRed, JP Silver, Maximillian, Alan Inferno, Amanda, Blue Nova, Brett Jackson, Bren, C4, Bart Marley and Flash Republic, plus Roger Goode, Erica Elle, Kevin Grenfell and Katherine all of 5FM.
He has also mixed alongside international DJ’s, recently opening for Stephan Pompegnaque (Hotel Costes), Jose Padilla (Café Del Mar) and Ravin (Buddha Bar) plus Alan X (X-Trax), Mark Bambach & Luigi Rosso (Coco Latte), Tony Stallion, Femi B, Tony Finger, D’syfa (Bukola) and Beat Boy Pete. He has also worked with Tasha Baxter, Jennifer Jones, Vernon Joel, Black Rabbit, Pam Andrews Jozi All Stars and Bukola (UK) having them perform and sing live over his DJ sets on various occasions.
Groovy Q has also enjoyed radio airplay, recently his two step styled remix of a Sade track was picked up and played out during Roger Goode’s dance show on 5FM. He was also showcased on Mark Gilman’s Vinyl Frontier (5FM) with a 20 minute mix of all his remixes and productions. He has also enjoyed airplay internationally on BBC Radio as a SA music representative.
Besides mixing and putting parties together, Groovy Q continues to pursue music production, and recently completed a set of concept reworks for MiCasa, FlashRepublic, Noa Tylo, Lady Lea and Battery 9. Groovy Q was selected as one of the top 14 in the Transmix contest with a honourable mention. His music is available for download on the Internet and has been awarded a top ten download for three months running on mPulse.
Presently Groovy Q is in the studio working with prose vocalist Cleo and ColorBlack, and he is soon to start recording the debut album for his live house group Soulversatile. Plus putting the finishing touches to remixes for Vocalist and Performer Vernon Joel, under the moniker of VJDJ. They have recently launched some of the new house tracks live to an unsuspecting club crowd who lapped it up and chanted for more! He was also commissioned by Ghetto Ruff Records to remix and produce tracks for SA soul sensation R.J.Benjamin, and interest in his work has been shown from a French record label at Midem 2006. There are also white label releases on vinyl of some of his bootleg tracks floating around. There’s no doubt that the future is bright for DJ Groovy Q.

PASSION AND DRIVING FORCE
To quote the lyrics to a popular House track: ‘Not everyone understands House Music, it’s a Spiritual Thing, a Body Thing, a Soul Thing…’ We will attempt to education, invigorate and celebrate the genre of music know as House Music..
WHAT LISTENERS CAN EXPECT
The main focus of the show is the music genre known as House Music. If it has a four to the floor beat, makes you want to dance and gets your head bobbing, you will probably find it here. We do not focus in on the deeper sound or the progressive sound, we don’t even focus on the local sound or the international sound, we focus in on HOUSE MUSIC. In other words, HOUSE-A-HOLICS from across the spectrum will find a home within a melting pot of musical bliss.
The show is split into FOUR sub sections, PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE plus HOUSE WORK:
THE PAST looks at the history of house music and constructs an audio soundtrack that transports you to a bygone but not forgotten era on the musical history timeline. Expect some classic House Gems from across the subgenres.
THE PRESENT is a journey through stuff that you may hear in the local or international Nightclubs, Bars and Festivals. Not only focussing on the floor fillers, but including the underground hits.
THE FUTURE takes you on a headlong drive straight into the unknown, breaking new house artists, house sub genres and birthing future house classics.
Expect DJ mixes from up-n-coming House DJ’s, recognised local and international superstar DJs and live House Artistes that contribute to the House sound. From mini interviews with local and international players, resident and guest DJ mixes, unreleased and fresh music talent, House club reviews, in studio House artiste chats, House record label profiles, unplugged House music sessions, live House showcases, House music & goodies giveaways and much more.
HOUSEWORK is a special feature each week. This section ties into the word HOUSE or HOME – from a food insert to a décor insert, as long as it’s got something to do with your HOUSE or HOME, you will hear it here. This is the sell-able section of the show – Quentin aka DJ Groovy Q is also a Chaiwalla (Artisan Tea Maker) producing and selling his own petite range of Chai styled tea and infused sherry at various Food Markets in and around the city of Cape Town. Each week, he invites various home artisans into studio to talk about their product. This section includes sellable adverts or branded slots within the HOUSE-A-HOLICS show framework. He also invites House DJs/artistes etc to chat about their favourite Home away from House.
The sections above are split into 30% chat, 60% music and 10% other across the show format.
