THIS IS THE IMPACT MICHAEL JACKSON HAD ON THE ART WORLD

An exhibition charting the influence Michael Jackson had on artists is heading to London next year.

Michael Jackson: On The Wall will arrive at the National Portrait Gallery on June 28, 2018 and finish on October 21, 2018. Had he still been alive, next summer would be the King of Pop’s 60th birthday.

Featured works come from Andy Warhol, David LaChapelle, Louise Lawler, Kehinde Wiley and Maggi Hambling. They’re taken from public and private collections, while new works have been especially made.

Dr Nicholas Cullinan, director of the National Portrait Gallery, said: “Michael Jackson: On the Wall takes an entirely new and quite radical approach by exploring the cultural impact of a unique figure through contemporary art. All the artists included – despite coming from different generations and parts of the world, and employing a range of media – are fascinated by what Jackson represented and what he invented.”

To accompany the exhibition, an illustrated publication featuring 120 images and words from Zadie Smith, Dr Nicholas Cullinan and Margo Jefferson will be released.
